After bringing a dachshund puppy home, many dachshund owners don’t know about the things that they need initially. I was also quite confused when I was in the initial stage of raising a dachshund. If you also have a dachshund, then you also face this issue in the initial stage.
In today’s blog, I will share some compulsory things to consider when we bring a dachshund puppy for the first time.
Tips on raising a dachshund puppy for beginners
Fragile back
dachshund comes with a long back and short legs, a long spinal cord, making them prone to back-related issues like IVDD. If we are not conscious about their fragile back and let them jump from a height, it leads to serious back problem in dachshunds, which can further leads to even paralysis.
For avoid their back related issue we must avoid the high intensity exercise and not allowed them to jump from height, you should remove table and other furniture materials from their living area to avoid jumping and if you live in a area where have stairs like apartment, not leaving them off the ledge is most important.
Weight control
Dachshunds are also prone to obesity. When they do not get enough exercise, there is are high chance of developing obesity in dachshunds. As I previously said, they have fragile backs. Obesity is dangerous for their back because it puts extra stress on their back.
That’s why weight control is most important in dachshunds, for that we need to provide them a exercise as their daily requirement.
We wrote a detailed blog about their exercise requirement, and the best exercise you can check out after reading this blog.
Mental stimulation
Providing them mental stimulation along with physical exercise is most important, because they also need mental well-being, along with physical. If they aren’t mentally stimulated, they may feel bored and depressed, a high chance of having separation anxiety.
Socialization
Early socialization is extremely important for raising healthy and well-behaved dachshunds. Their initial stage is golden learning and development. In this period, they should properly socialize; if socialization is missed in this phase, they may show behavioural issues and even separation anxiety when they grow up.
That’s why early socialization is important, for early socialization we take them for walks where strangers and other animals are present, this will help them to get familiar with many other animal and people, which also reduce their excessive barking issue when they see a stranger person around their home.
Safe and comfortable living space
Making a place comfortable where your dog spends most of the time is most important, providing them a comfortable bed, crate (if your puppy is trained), is important for their good mood.
They are also passionate about digging a random places like beds, sofas, gardens, because they are digger dogs, digging is an important skill during hunting underground animals. You can provide them with a dedicated digging area.
You can make a dedicated digging area by process below
Choose an area near your house where your dog loves to dig
Build boundaries using a wood frame, garden edging, or even stones, ideal size 3*3 for your size, you can build as your dog’s needs.
Ddown ig down to about 1 foot deep, you can use sand for better drainage on that.
Fill with diggable materials like sand, soft soil, and mulch.h
Your dog’s digging area is ready, you can let the digging begin. begin
Grooming
Grooming plays a vital role in their health. When we groom our dog naturally, they are away from harmful parasites. This can cause the transmission of harmful diseases and also lead to certain allergic reactions. We can bathe them every week or once every 15 days.
Vaccination
Dachshunds are prone to many deadly diseases, Proper vaccination is beneficial for both. Diseases like rabies are deadly for humans, transmitted when they bite humans; that’s why prevention from these deadly diseases is better than a cure. DHPP/DAPP is also a core vaccine that you need to administer to your dog compulsorily.
Good diet
A good diet plays a vital role in dogs’ physical and emotional development, they need a food that is high in protein, vitamins, and other essential minerals. Protein helps in energy production, vitamins and minerals help to maintain normal immunity, and hormone production in the body. If any nutritional deficiency occurs, we can supplement them, but remember these signs and symptoms can indicate other severe diseases. That’s why you need to consult your vet before administering a supplement to them.
Emotional needs
Dachshunds are emotional dogs; they need frequent attention from their owner. When they feel sad, we need to provide them emotional support, We can do it for like cuddling or giving them attention, which helps them feel good and keeps them away from emotional disorders.
How much attention do dachshund need?
Dachshund need moderate to high attention, escpcially in puppies. While they are small in size but big in personality require a regular interaction and mental stimulation and physical activity to stay happy and well behaved.
