I know we all experienced a new dachshund puppy being brought into our home; this happy phase is the most precious moment for all dog owners. After bringing our dachshund puppy home, we need to be conscious of many things, like puppy health, socialisation, and early dog training. Considering this activity in your dog’s routine from their childhood stage, they are likely to be good and well-behaved dachshunds.
In today’s blog, I will new dachshund puppy checklist that we must follow after bringing a dachshund puppy into our home.
What do you need for a new dachshund puppy
Proper early socialisation
Early socialisation has many benefits for your dog. If you don’t socialise your dog to different animals, people, and environments, it has a higher chance of developing serious behaviour problems like excessive barking, separation anxiety, and territorial behaviour. That’s why you need to socialise your dachshund puppy from an early stage.
Socialising your dog from an early stage helps with fear-based behaviour; if this develops in your dog, they can be suspicious or wary of strangers. Socialising your dog from their childhood shapes lifelong temperament because of their critical learning window (up to ~16 weeks old).
Here are some benefits of early socialisation in your dachshund
- Exposing new people and other animals at an early stage boosts your dog’s confidence in further social situations.
- Well-socialised Dachshunds are less likely to become aggressive, anxious, or overly shy.
- Early socialisation encourages friendly and calm behaviour towards other people.
- When your dog is socialised early, this makes vet visits and travelling easier.
Provide Proper Exercise & Routine
After bringing a dachshund into your home, you need to manage their exercise schedule carefully because, unlike other dogs, dachshunds have fragile backs. You need to choose exercises that are of low intensity, like walking or slow running, and avoid high-intensity activities like running, long-term walking. Instead of the long exercise session, you need to go with short and frequent exercise throughout the day. High-intensity exercise like jumping, stairs, or rough play can strain their backs and cause lifelong injury.
Exercise is beneficial for your dachshund puppy. Here are some benefits of exercising dogs.
- Regularly exercising your puppy helps to optimal the physical growth
- Dachshunds are prone to being obese. When we provide them enough exercise, they are less likely to be obese. Obesity can be dangerous for their back.
- Exercise not only provides them with physical stimulation, but it also provides mental stimulation and makes your dog sharp and focused.
- Exercising daily also helps to make your dog well behaved because when they have excess unused energy, they tend to show unusual behaviour like excessive barking, chewing everything.
- Exercise boosts the cardiovascular health of your pups due to improved blood circulation and strengthens the heart muscle.
- Exercising outside also encourages socialisation in your dog.
Also, you need to take care of their exercise time. Also, they can feel physical fatigue and mental overwhelm by overexercising, which can cause fear or other behavioural issues.
Another thing you need to take care of in their exercise is their growing bones. They are very sensitive and can easily fracture during exercise.

Monitor Their Health
Monitoring the health of your new Dachshund puppy is extremely important. When you monitor their health, the chances of developing serious diseases are low. When we bring our new dachshund puppy home, at first, we don’t know anything about what to monitor for their health.
What are the benefits of monitoring your dog’s health from an early stage
- Dachshund puppies are prone to allergies, diarrhoea, and a lack of appetite. By recognising early signs, you can prevent these from becoming serious problems.
- They need a series of vaccinations to protect against deadly diseases like parvo and distemper. When you monitor their health regularly, monitoring helps you stay on schedule with shots
- By monitoring their weight, appetite and energy level, you can better track the growth and development of your dog.
- Monitoring their stools and peeing
Here are a few health monitoring activities you need to do after bringing a new dachshund puppy to your home.
- Observe Bathroom Habits: By observing the bathroom habits of your dachshund, you can easily recognise potential diseases like infections, parasites, or food intolerances.
- Track Energy and Behaviour: Tracking the energy and behaviour of your Dachshund is important because subtle changes can reveal early signs of illness, stress, or discomfort. Dachshund are small but expressive dog their energy level is a powerful indicator of of their overall health and happiness.
- Vaccination and Deworming on Schedule: Dachshunds can have worms like Roundworms, Hookworms, Whipworms, Tapeworms and Heartworms. They can severely affect your dog’s health; that’s why you need to deworm them in time.
They also need to vaccinate your dog to protect it from various types of diseases, like Parvovirus, Rabies, Parainfluenza etc, You can vaccinate them after consulting with your vet.
The point I consider above can be dangerous to your dog if you apply them without consulting your vet that’s why you need to consult your vet before taking any action in vaccination and deworming.
