How to stop my dachshund barking

If you’re wondering how to stop my dachshund barking, you’re not alone—many dachshund owners face this challenge. The key is understanding the root cause of this behaviour.

We all have to deal with the problem of our Dachshunds barking a lot. It not only disturbs us but also our neighbours. My dachshund also used to bark a lot when he was a child. But I train my Toby not to bark a lot.

But dachshunds tend to be a little stubborn, sometimes, they ignore your order even after a lot of training. Because their stubbornness is their instinct, even if challenges come, with the right approach at the right time, you can train your Dachshund to bark less.

The main reason that triggers the dachshund to bark a lot

Boredom: Boredom causes excessive barking in dachshunds because barking is a way of releasing frustration in dogs.

Separation anxiety: They are very attached to their owner, and when their owner goes away or they are left alone, they tend to show their separation anxiety by barking.

Territorial Behaviour: A  dachshund barks at strangers because of their territorial nature. They are originally bred for hunting. They protect their owner, their home, and their toys. If a stranger comes near any of these, they may show their territorial nature and start barking excessively.

Attention-Seeking: Dachshunds love attention. When they want attention from their owner or anyone, they tend to bark.

Excitement or Playfulness: Dachshunds are energetic and playful by nature. When they are very excited about anything, they tend to bark to show their excitement.

Here are the steps for how to stop dachshund excessive barking

Dog Training: You can train your dog to bark less. You can train your dog for orders like ‘sit’, ‘ go’, ‘ come’ like You can also train your dog to bark less. I used to call my Toby ‘stop’ when he barked unusually, and he stopped. But sometimes they can be stubborn and ignore your order.

Give enough exercise: Dachshunds are very energetic and active dogs. They need to be active for their overall well-being. When you don’t give enough exercise to your dachshund, they feel irritated and bark excessively.

Socialisation: This is something I have seen a lot. Some people raise their dogs in isolation from a young age without taking them outdoors. As a result, due to a lack of socialisation early on, Dachshunds tend to bark a lot when they see new people. This is the main cause your dachshund barks at everyone when they grow.

Seek professional help: if your dog barks a lot without any actual reason, you can also consult your doctor or a dog specialist. They may fix your dog’s excessive barking issue.

Conclusion

Sometimes our dachshund barks all the time without any visible reason, Dachshunds can bark for various reasons like proper socialisation, not giving enough exercise, territorial behaviour and separation anxiety. However, we can make our excessively barking dachshund into a less barking dog by proper training. My dog also barks excessively sometimes, but I managed it by proper training and a proper exercise routine for my dog.
