Difference Between Standard and Miniature Dachshund

Before choosing the best dachshund breed for yourself, you need to know about each breed and their behaviours in detail. Despite their same group, they have some different temperaments. Today, in this blog, I will share what is the difference between standard and miniature dachshund

Standard dachshund and miniature dachshund are two different breeds, but they are considered different because of their different weight and behaviour.

The difference may not be much in these two breeds, but you need to consider it while making a suitable pet for yourself.

After reading this blog, you will know which breed is good and suitable for you.

Standard Dachshund vs mini dachshund temperament

Mini dachshunds tend to be more energetic than standard dachshunds because of their small size.

They have a playful, guarding, and curious nature. During training time, sometimes they tend to be a little bit stubborn, and this nature can make the dachshund training process a little bit hard.

While standard dachshunds are also energetic and playful, a little bit less so than miniature dachshunds, their size makes them a bit sluggish.

They are confident, calm, and affectionate. This nature makes this breed slightly easier to train than the miniature.

Standard and mini dachshund size

In terms of size, standard dachshunds are bigger in size than miniature ones. Standard dachshunds have 20 to 23 centimetres of height at the shoulder.

While miniature dachshunds are a little smaller than standard dachshunds. They have a height of 13 to 15 centimetres at the shoulder.

Miniature breeds are suitable for those who love small, energetic pets.

Difference between standard and miniature dachshund in weight

A full-grown standard dachshund generally weighs between 7.5 to 15.5 kg (16 to 32 lb).

Similarly, miniature dachshunds weigh a bit less than standard ones. A full gown miniature typically weighs less than 5.5 kg (12 lb)

In fact, standard and miniature dachshunds are the same breed. Standard breeds need to be in a certain weight range to be a miniature dachshund.

Coat Types

Both standard and miniature breed comes with smooth (short-haired), long-haired, and wire-haired coat types.

Short-haired dachshunds have short, smooth coats all around their bodies, long haired dachshunds have long and curly fur on their bodies, and wire haired dachshunds have thick, thorn-like coats on their body.

Colors and Patterns

Both breeds come with the same colour options. Red, black, tan, cream, chocolate, and tan are the widely used color patterns of the standard and miniature dachshund.

Health and Lifespan

According to the American Kennel Club, both breeds can live between 12 to 16 years. We can maximize their lifespan with a healthy lifestyle, good nutrition.

When we talk about its health, it’s important to also know about the diseases it might be prone to.

These breeds are prone to some diseases that affect their lifespan and health.

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), heart disease, and cancer are the most dangerous diseases in miniature and standard dachshunds.

Care and Maintenance

As a good pet owner, it is very important to take proper care of your pet after bringing it home.

These two breeds need the same types of care.

What things you need for proper pet care and maintenance are below.

For a happy life for a dachshund puppy needs a comfortable habitat. Both miniature and standard dachshunds can live in the same type of home, but the standard dachshund needs a bit more large room to move around comfortably.

From a food’s nutritional point of view, they need the same types of nutrients in their diet to be healthy.

Exercise is important to keep a dachshund healthy. Standard dachshunds need slightly more exercise than a miniature because of their body size.

A miniature dachshund is smaller in size and has less muscle mass than standard ones. That’s why they will be okay with a simple 20-30 min outdoor walk; they don’t need. Also, miniature dachshunds have lower stamina than standard dachshunds, and they tend to tire quickly.

If you are a busy individual miniature dachshund can be a good choice for you, because of its low care effort than other big dogs.

What is right for you?

If you are a busy individual, have little time for its care and maintenance, it is better to choose the miniature breed.

And if you love calm, lovely, energetic, and little big pets, then you can go with the standard one.
