Trimming a nail using a clipper can be a bit risky, because a dachshund can’t stay calm for a short period of time properly, and there is a chance of cutting deep into their nail and bleeding. 

After preparing the essential tool, you can start cutting the nail by calming a dog. Calming your dog is important because if they are unbalanced during the cutting process, it can cut your nail deeply and cause bleeding and pain.

After calming a dog, you can start cutting nails slowly, making sure that you cut only the tip of the nail. Cutting deeply can cause bleeding because dogs’ nails have blood vessels Cutting their nails deeply can cause pain in your dog.

How to trim your dachshund’s nails using sandpaper board

Use a sandpaper board to cut a dachshund’s nail in a safer and stress-free way. To do this, you need to place the treat inside a box that the sandpaper board has, then encourage them to dig at the box to reach the treat. As your dog digs, the rough surface of sandpaper automatically grinds the tip of the nail.

To cut their nail using a sandboard, you need to drop their favorite treat under the sandboard, and command your dog to dig on that, the rough surface of the board automatically rubs their nails.

After rubbing a few second on their open the lead of the board to allow your dog to take his treat.

Ear cleaning is essential for them to avoid infection. 

Ear cleaning doesn’t need special equipment, you just need a good quality cleaner as your vet prescribed, some cotton balls, and some treats. Do not use a cotton-tip applicator, which can push ear debris further ear canal.

How to clean a dachshund’s ear step by step 

Before cleaning a dachshund’s ears, we need to have a few things which is essential for it, like pet ear cleaner, which is available in pet stores and veterinary shops, cotton balls, and treats (optional).

Comfortably lie your dog down on a surface and check the first ear if there is any redness, swelling. 

If any of these signs appear, contact your vet before cleaning their ear.

Gently lift the ear flaps to expose the ear canal, and carefully squeeze a few drops of ear canal, continuing a raise the ear flaps.

Gently massage a ear base for 20-30 seconds which spreading the ear cleaner into every part of ear canal. 

And let your dog shake his head,, which brings debris to the outer ear, and wipe the loosened debris using cotton balls from the outer ear andthe visible part of the ear.

Teeth cleaning 

This is also important for your dachshund’s healthy gums and teeth, Dachshunds are prone to teeth and gums-related issues because of their narrow jaw structure. If we dont clean them regularly, harmful bacteria can develop and cause infection on the gums. This can lead to further appetite-related issues in the dachshund. 

How to clean your dachshund’s teeth to prevent gum-related issues

Gather essential supplies like a smooth brush, dog-safe toothpaste (never use a human toothpaste that is toxic for dogs), and treats for reward. 

Make your dog comfortable by gently touching their muzzle, lifting their lips, it can take a few days to be comfortable to your dog. 

Introduce the toothpaste slowly, start with a short session, and try with a small amount of toothpaste on the brush. 

Let them lick and sniff the toothpaste on the brush at first, and when your dog gets comfortable with the toothpaste smell, start brushing them slowly.

Brush them thoroughly by lifting their upper and lower lips, brushing like you are drawing a small circle on their teeth. Don’t brush roughly, which can cause pain.

Manually check their small black patches, plaque buildup, and clean them most.

Give a list of praise and their favourite treat after completing a brushing.

Before cleaning their teeth, we should prepare essential equipment for this, such as a soft toothbrush and toothpaste.
